MYKITA / Damir Doma

An in-depth study of form, colour and surface laid the foundation for the MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA collaboration. Inspired by the idea of translating the traditional circular frames of the intellectual avant-garde into a modern expression is how the contemporary design series with models DD01, DD02, DD03 and DD04 came into being. The collection is distinguished by a minimal aesthetic; visible construction and a progressive use of materials are recurring design elements. All frames are manufactured at the MYKITA HAUS in Berlin, where traditional handcraft meets modern engineering. The MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA Collection is a product incarnation for the present-day, where luxury is also state-of-the-art technology.

MYKITA is a modern manufactory that combines precision craftsmanship with new technologies. A constant search for innovation, the visionary use of materials and a wealth of experience in eyewear design are the defining elements behind MYKITA’s collections. A key factor in the company’s success is its holistic business philosophy, which brings together expertise from all disciplines under a single roof, the MYKITA HAUS. It thrives on the power of a self-contained network that enables interdisciplinary research and the transfer of technologies. This all-encompassing mentality is also reflected in the MYKITA Shops; the unique retail concept unites the firm’s own design principles with optical precision made in Germany.

Damir Doma is the founder and creative director of the Damir Doma brand. The Croatian-born designer grew up surrounded by toiles in his mother’s atelier in Germany and later studied fashion in Munich and Berlin, where he graduated in 2004. After gaining experience in the ateliers of Antwerp designers Raf Simons and Dirk Schönberger, he relocated to Paris to launch his first menswear collection in 2007. The first women’s prêt-à-porter collection followed three years later. In June 2015, the Damir Doma brand moved its runway shows to Milan, also reinforcing the relationship between his men’s and women’s collections, which share the same creative inspiration, cuts and materials.

Damir Doma’s collections stem from a soft, melancholic quest for tranquillity. Exhibiting a measured study of proportion and mélange of textures, his designs are a serene union of rough and refined. Silhouettes draw upon a myriad of inspirations from the worlds of art and architecture, foregoing embellishment and decoration for purity of form. A sense of uniform and the interplay between shadow and light is the golden thread that runs through his work. Questioning the modern wardrobe, the garments offer multiple expressions of identity – contrasting androgynous elements with cross-cultural and historical dress codes.
