Park Ji-Fan, director of the PARKSEOBO Foundation and grandson of the seminal artist Park Seo-Bo, is deeply involved in maintaining and extending his grandfather’s artistic legacy. As a key collaborator in the MYKITA | PARK SEO-BO limited edition, Ji-Fan provides a unique perspective on the creative process and the emotional resonance of his grandfather’s work.
In this exclusive interview, he shares personal insights on how Park Seo-Bo's philosophies of discipline, simplicity, and deep connection with materials shaped not only his own appreciation for art but also the vision for this collaboration.
MYKITA: Park Seo-Bo is often regarded as a pioneer of the Dansaekhwa movement. How do you believe his contributions to this minimalist art movement have influenced contemporary art and design?
Park Ji-Fan: My grandfather’s contributions to Dansaekhwa, especially his focus on repetition and the tactile qualities of the canvas, have shifted the emphasis in art from representation to the experience of creation itself. While the latter emphasis on process sets Dansaekhwa apart from Minimalism in art historical context, his works reflect a meditative, almost spiritual engagement with materials, which aligns with contemporary ‘minimalist’ design principles where simplicity and the essence of form are celebrated. Park Seo-Bo’s legacy has deeply influenced how artists and designers approach their craft today, encouraging a more mindful, material-driven creation.
Artist and eyewear enthusiast: Park Seo-Bo in one of his beloved MYKITA frames.
MYKITA: Park Seo-Bo’s artworks are celebrated for their minimalist aesthetic and deep emotional resonance. What can you tell us about your work in preserving and extending his artistic legacy?
Park Ji-Fan: Preserving and extending Park Seo-Bo’s legacy is a responsibility I cherish. His art is not just about aesthetics but is a philosophy and discipline rooted in process. My role involves ensuring his ethos to remain intact while introducing his work to new audiences through collaborations and exhibitions. I am constantly exploring new mediums – whether through design, fashion, or contemporary projects like the one with MYKITA – ensuring that his artistic approach continues to inspire future generations.
MYKITA: Can you share with us what it was like growing up with Park Seo-Bo as your grandfather? How did his artistic influence shape your own appreciation for art and design?
Park Ji-Fan: Growing up with Park Seo-Bo as my grandfather was a unique experience. I was surrounded by art, by this I mean not just his paintings but how he approached life—with patience, discipline, and focus. His studio was like a second home, and witnessing the meticulous hours he poured into each piece taught me to appreciate the process behind creation. His influence shaped my understanding of art as something requiring time, dedication, and a personal connection with the materials, which continues to shape my own perspective on art and design today.
MYKITA: The collaboration between MYKITA and Park Seo-Bo resulted in a beautifully crafted limited artist edition. What can you tell us about the process and your grandfather’s approach?
Park Ji-Fan: The collaboration with MYKITA was an exciting journey. Park Seo-Bo has always believed in the harmony of form and function, which aligns perfectly with MYKITA’s design philosophy. Translating the essence of his work into eyewear required me to capture not just the visual aesthetics but the deeper philosophy behind his Écriture series. Park Seo-Bo was very involved in ensuring the final product stayed true to his vision, balancing the artistic expression with the practicality of wearable design.
MYKITA: Can you share any memorable moments or anecdotes from working alongside your grandfather on this project?
Park Ji-Fan: One memorable moment was when we were discussing how to incorporate the colours from his Écriture series into the eyewear. I remember how committed he was to staying true to the original essence of his work, even when translating that onto a much smaller canvas, like a pair of glasses, posed challenges. His attention to detail, regardless of scale, was remarkable, and working with him on this project reinforced in myself the importance of maintaining that artistic integrity.
"His works represent a meditative, almost spiritual engagement with materials", says Park Ji-Fan.
MYKITA: How do you think he would feel about the final product and the response it has received so far?
Park Ji-Fan: I believe he would be very proud of the final product. The way the designs have embodied the essence of his art is something he would have deeply appreciated. The overwhelmingly positive response is a testament to the care and dedication that went into the collaboration. My grandfather always wanted his work to connect with people on a deeper level, and seeing how this edition has resonated with both art enthusiasts and collectors would certainly give him a sense of fulfilment.
MYKITA: Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives you’re involved in that you would like to share?
Park Ji-Fan: We have several exciting projects in development, including new collaborations that explore the intersection of art and design. A major focus is expanding the reach of my grandfather’s work across more diverse mediums, from digital platforms to wearable art. We are also preparing a retrospective exhibition that will highlight some of his lesser-known works, offering new perspectives on his impact on contemporary art. I’m excited to share more details as these projects evolve.
Thank you Park Ji-Fan for offering such a thoughtful look into the creative journey.
